The Society of Architectural Historians seeks proposals for two paper sessions (one in Montréal and one virtual) that further the goals of the SAH IDEAS Initiative (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accountability, and Sustainability).
SAH invites everyone interested in the history of the built environment to submit a proposal to chair an SAH IDEAS Session at the 2023 Annual International Conference. SAH membership is required to chair or present research at the conference, thus non-members who are selected to chair a session will be required to join SAH in August 2022 when conference registration opens for Session Chairs and Speakers.
For the two SAH IDEAS Sessions (one in Montréal, one virtual) we are seeking sessions that explore the intersection of architecture and social justice; inclusion and exclusion; diversity; transparency; accessibility; borders and conflicts; systemic inequalities, and challenges of method. In every case, the subject should be clearly defined in critical and historical terms. Since the principal purpose of the Annual International Conference is to inform conference attendees of the state of research in architectural history and related disciplines, proposals covering every period in the history of architecture and all aspects of the built environment, including landscape and urban history, are encouraged.
Since late submissions cannot be considered, it is recommended that proposals be submitted before the deadline.
Sessions for Montréal 2023 will not be recorded.
Sessions for Virtual 2023 will be recorded live in their entirety, and full sessions will be available for conference attendees to view for 30 days after the virtual conference. Papers will be delivered live through Zoom and will not be pre-recorded.
Proposals for the SAH IDEAS Sessions are to be submitted online by 11:59 pm CDT on Sunday, July 10, 2022. Carla Yanni and Mohammad Gharipour, in consultation with the SAH Executive Committee and representatives from the SAH IDEAS Committee will select the session proposals.
Prospective session chairs must include the following in their proposal:
- A session title not longer than 65 characters, including spaces and punctuation
- Summary of the subject and the premise in no more than 300 words
- Your name, professional affiliation (if applicable), address, telephone, and email address (SAH does not allow more than two co-chairs per session.)
- A current CV (2 pages max)
Proposals must be submitted through the online portal to be considered.
Session Chairs are expected to fund their own travel and related expenses to participate in the conference. A limited number of Annual Conference Fellowships are available to Session Chairs. A copy of the Session Chair Guidelines that includes deadlines and step-by-step processes will be distributed. Session Chairs are required to pre-register for the conference in August 2022.
